Frequently Asked Questions for Trade

SAFE-D CLIPS

How does 17th Edition 3rd Amendment effect wiring on escape routes?

From 1st July 2015 ALL new surface cable installations in escape routes in non-domestic buildings must be secured with non-combustible fixings (section 521.11). It is no longer suitable to rely on PVC trunking alone, as it will melt (est 130°C) and allow the cables to drop. Fixings should be tested and certified to ensure they will withstand the intense temperature of building fires. Stainless steel cable ties are not recommended as they have a melting point of approximately 538°C, far below the temperature of the average building fire (i.e. 600-900°C).

When choosing a fixing be sure that it also adheres to section 522.8.11 which states that fixings should not have sharp edges which can damage the casings of softer cabling, such as data or telecom cables.

Screws/nails also needs to comply with the legislation – plastic wallplugs are not recommended due to their low melting point (est 130°C)' when the wallplug fails then the Clip (& the cables) will drop. We recommend a good-quality masonry screw, such as the Dewalt WallDOGs, with wide sharper flutes. These screws don’t require a wallplug, saving the installer time and money. An alternative for larger jobs, where time is of the essence, is a Spit-Fired nail gas gun.

What is classed as an escape route?

An escape route is a route designated for escape to a place of safety in the event of an emergency. This may include not only defined routes such as corridor, stairways and hallways – but also open areas through which escaping persons might be reasonably expected to pass, on route to a place of safety.

How to comply with 17th Edition wiring changes?

Safe-D Clips are the quickest, easiest and most reliable way to comply with new legislations. The full range has been tested and certified by Exova Warrington Fire, confirming compliance to BS5839 part 1 section 26.2e. – resistant to fire with mechanical shock and resistance to fire with mechanical shock & water spray – both for 120 minutes.

The tests were carried out with the clips holding Enhanced Fire Performance 1.5mm 2 core cables, and subjected to 930°C (+40 -0°C) for 120 minutes at a voltage of 500V rms while maintaining circuit integrity – a key requirement for essential wiring systems and the highest requirement any cable type is ever liable to need, thus more than sufficient for all other cable categories.

Do Safe-D Clips need to be installed in trunking?

No, the clips work equally well when fixed within plastic trunking, or fixed direct to substrate.

In ‘back of house’ areas such as corridors and service stairwells for example, cables can easily be retained inside Safe-D Clips – saving on cost and time. In ‘front of house’ areas where appearance matters more, then Safe-D Clips fit snugly inside all PVC plastic trunking from sizes 2-8 inclusive.

Do Regs apply to domestic properties?

Yes! BS 7671:2008 incorporating Amendment 3 is the general standard for wiring in UK – and applicable to domestic properties. In common access/egress routes such as hallways, stairs and over front and rear doors, new installations of cables in PVC trunking - whether fixed to walls or the underside of ceilings - must be secured to eliminate risk of entanglement.

Are all metal clips suitable?

No! Stainless Steel for example can fail above 538°C, so unsuitable in typical fire conditions.  And clips with untreated edges will corrode if exposed to any condensations, to compromise functionality and reliability.

As a life-safety issue, for peace-of-mind certified products should always be used… where actual recorded tests in fire conditions confirm that the assured material and the design will always be suitable and fully fit-for-purpose.

What is the recommended spacing for Safe-D Clips?

Fixing intervals are determined by the cable manufacturers’ recommendations and/or common sense. This usually is approximately 300mm spacing on vertical runs, and 400mm on horizontal runs.

We generally advise 400mm above doorways, and consider 750mm spacing to be acceptable for between exists & entrances.

What colours is D-Line trunking available in?

To save need for paint and to blend with décor – or to create a striking visual feature - D-Line is available in a wide variety of colours, including:

  • White
  • Magnolia
  • Aluminium Effect
  • Black
  • Oak Effect

(Not all colours are available in all profile sizes, please see page 12 of our brochure for full colour availability chart)

Are colour matched surface boxes available?

Yes, surface boxes are available for most colours. Please see page 12 of our brochure for full colour availability chart.

What accessories are available?

D-Line produce a full suite of colour match accessories, made from robust ABS, including bends, corners, tees, couplers, end caps, pattress adaptors etc. There are two types of accessories available; Smooth-Fit, incorporating male-insert shoulders which are held in place by the trunking lids and give a perfect seamless finish; and Clip-Over bends/tees (currently only available for 1/2-round 30x15mm Mini Trunking, 50x25mm TV Trunking and 22x22mm Floor Trim), where tabs securely grip the trunking to give a neat and quick installation.

Please see page 12 of our brochure for full range availability.

Can D-Line be installed around bay windows?

For ½ round lengths or ¼ round lengths, in our accessories range we offer 90 degree bends.  Bay windows (with 45 degree or greater angles) can pose a problem as, because of the way the lid functions, once closed in this application then lids will not easily open.

To fit D-Line lengths around a bay window we suggest (after measuring) mitring the lengths, so cutting special (45 degrees or greater) angles that match your bay window. A good tip is to practice cutting the desired angles on spare pieces to ensure the right fit.

Next close the lids and insert the cables before the lengths are fitted – if necessary use a drawstring to insert the cables.

With the lengths cut specifically, and the lids closed with the cables inside, the lengths can be stuck into position using our adhesive-backing.  If any gaps occur we advise they be filled with decorators caulk.

How do you recommend cutting the trunking?

Generally a junior hacksaw (32Tpi), is ideal; perhaps with a mitre block to keep steady trunking lengths when being cut.

For larger installations, or installations where minimal mess is required a Ratchet Cutting Tool is available for profile sizes up to 40x20mm. This tool cuts easily and cleanly through the trunking with minimal effort and creates almost no residual dust!

FLOOR CABLE COVER

What cavity sizes is D-Line Floor Cable Cover available in?

·         Light Duty Floor Cable Cover is great for areas of infrequent foot traffic. The cavity (17x9mm) comfortably accommodates 2x 8mm cables (or similar), available in both 1.8m and 9m lengths - which can be cut to required length.

·         Medium Duty Floor Cable Cover is perfect for areas of regular foot traffic. There is a choice of cavity sizes:

  • 14x9mm, for 2x 8mm cables or similar
  • 30x10mm, for 3x 8mm cables or similar. This size comes in plain black, or black with 2x yellow-hazard stripes.
  • 2 compartment (each 13x12mm), ideal for running power & data cables side-by-side.

What lengths are available?

D-Line Light Duty Floor Cable Cover is available in 1.8m and 9m lengths, and can be easily cut to shorten.

D-Line Medium Duty Linkable Floor Cable Cover is available in 1.8m and 9m lengths. The lengths can be cut to shorten, and are uniquely linkable with connector pins (suppled with lengths). Multiple lengths can be connected to make runs any length required - simply push pins into the holes at end of the lengths to connect; pull apart to release.

How does the Medium Duty version link together?

D-Line connector pins push into holes on the end profile of the length. These pins have been specifically designed to give enough friction-grip to hold lengths together during use, but can be pulled out if/when required.
